WWDC 2011 Predictions

Since I missed episode 42 of The Love of Tech Podcast where Donny, Darren, and guest host Shawn discussed the tech news of the week including their WWDC thoughts and predictions I thought I would document exactly what I think Apple will announce Monday June 6th at the WWDC keynote. They have already announced that the topics will be Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud and I don't think their will be any deviation or "One More Things" added to the keynote.

Lion
I think the discussion on lion will be brief. The primary topics in my opinion will be delivery to users via the Mac App store sometime in the next month under 99$. Most of the new features will relate to iCloud.

iOS 5
I think iOS 5 will have typical yearly improvements starting with notifications. I don't think the UI of the actually notifications will be vastly different from how it is today. I think the main improvement will be an app or interface to view past notifications similar to how boxcar or prowl manage their notifications now. I also think that their will be social integration, Twitter maybe Facebook, directly into the OS. This will give users the ability to at minimum send pictures directly to the services with the potential for deeper integration into contacts, messages, and safari. I think apple will beef up their voice control service already present in iOS. I really don't expect voice input into text fields rather more natural language input to the OS wide voice control interface. Currently your commands are limited to "Call", "Play", or "Whats Playing" but, I think Apple will add the ability to do Siri style inputs to the entire OS. Finally I think their will be some sort of improvements to multitasking. They will probably add more official background capable APIs and improvments to the existing ones; gestures to move between applications; and improvements to the algorithm that keeps apps in the multitasking tray. I do not believe that that widgets will make an appearance in iOS at all.

iCloud
This is where the magic will really happen. I think it will tie Mac OSX to iOS more so than ever before. I have no idea how the structure or pricing of iCloud and Mobile me will work. It might replace Mobile me entirely or just be a replacement for portions of it. However I do think that contact, calendar, and bookmark sync will join find my iPhone as free services. iCloud will be a seamless sync service that takes what we love about Dropbox on our Macs and ties that directly into iOS. Their will be a music component that allows the ability to play any song that is matched with an available track in iTunes to be played on any iOS device or Mac over the air. There will be no uploading of your library just identification like the genius feature does today and all your tracks will appear on all your devices without any work on your part. I also believe that apple will mention Video as a future part of this service but it will not be available at launch. The second component of iCloud will be file sync. Currently Apple wants you to use iTunes to shuffle files to and from your Mac into different apps like Keynote, Garageband, and iMovie. This will still happen but now via the iCloud. iCloud folders will be on your Mac in Lion that line up with this part of your iOS device so you can drop a pages file into a folder on your Mac and then wirelessly open it on your iPad or iPhone. I think app developers will also be allowed to sync app data between iOS devices through the iCloud such as game saves, reading position, twitter time-line position, or notes. I don't know Apples pricing structure for iCloud and I wont try to predict it but I expect the service to launch officially in September when iOS 5 is released along side the new iPhone and iPod touch.
