What should we expect from the Apple Event next Wednesday?

Top

Apple has announced an event next Wednesday, September 1st. Their
fall/September event is always where Steve Jobs introduces the new
iPods to the world. This year may be different though, with all of
Apples focus shifting to the iPod touch and away from the traditional
iPod classic, nano, and shuffle. Many rumors of a new iteration of the
Apple TV lead me to believe we will see that added to the mix next
Wednesday as well.
So what will be announced? Follow the jump to read my predictions.

iPod touch
It is a given that Apple will update its most profitable iPod. Apple
will most likely add the retina display, front facing camera, and
processor from the iPhone 4. I also think a 3.2 mp rear facing camera
will be added with similar specs to the camera found on the iPhone
3Gs. In additon, the new iPod touch will launch with iOS 4.1 and the
update will also be provided to the iPhone. I also expect to hear
some news about iOS 4.1 for the iPad. I hope that a GM of the
software will be released for developer use with a widespread consumer
release a few weeks later.

Remaining iPods
I personally feel that Apple will slightly lower prices, and
potentially change some colors but, leave the specs and design of the
classic iPods unchanged. The non iOS based iPods sales numbers have
been declining for several quarters now and I don't believe that Apple
will pump more R and D dollars into them.

Update: Based on the recent leaks broken by iLounge and BGR I now think that the clickwheel iPods will be no more.  I expect Steve to announce a new small shuffle sized iPod nano redesign that incorporates a touchscreen only interface.  This will bring about the death of of the shuffle and, I expect the iPod classic.

iTunes
I hope that we will see a cocoa based rewrite of iTunes and possibly
64 bit support. I don't believe that the application will change much
with the exception of support for new devices. The one big feature, a
cloud component to iTunes, probably wont arrive until the Carolina
data center
is complete at years end.

Apple TV
This will be the "One more thing" of this Septembers announcement.
The long rumored 99$ iOS based Apple TV will be released with an app store and an
update to the Apple remote app for controlling it via an
iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. I think/hope that Apple will highlight some
high profile apps such as Netflix, Hulu, ABC Player, and Slingplayer.
There will be no subscription model to iTunes announced at this event,
the only change will be limited 0.99$ tv show rentals.

Final Thoughts
This should be an exciting event and one of the last nails in the non
iOS based iPod's coffin. Be sure to check out the live recording of The Love
of Tech Podcast episode 10 next wednesday night after the event to
hear everything about what was announced.
