iTunes Match FUD

Gabe via Macdrifter

Several podcasts and news feeds I partake of have been talking about perceived problems with iTunes Match. My experience has been pleasant.

iTunes Match is a good thing for consumers. It’s forward thinking and should be rewarded.

I really don’t understand all of the hate directed toward iTunes match, my experiences match exactly what Gabe describes. It has been pleasant and adds to the experience of listening to music on my Mac, work PC, and iOS devices. Why is that not worth $25?

Apple thinks iTunes Match is streaming

Apple

Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it to any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

Between this and Eddy Cue’s comment that iTunes match would cache or intelligently download your music as you play it, I think its a safe assumption that iTunes match does stream you music to all of your devices. The “cache or intelligently download” means that even though songs are downloaded to your iOS device as you play them when space is running low older songs are removed from your device. I am looking forward to late October when iTunes match is launched.

Understanding iTunes match and iCloud

In the process of writing a WWDC recap post that is admittedly a little late to the party, I kept expanding the paragraph on iTunes match. I found myself adding clarification based on the information presented in the keynote and made available on Apples iTunes match page in order to clear up some of the confusion presented on many of the popular Apple podcasts and blogs. I decided to scrap that entire post and expand that single paragraph into an entire article trying to answer some of these recurring questions about iTunes in the cloud.

Remaining questions about iTunes in the cloud

Shawn Blanc via Shawnblanc.net

There are likely going to be several things that will give the iTunes locker an edge over Amazon and Google, but the premier advantage will be its integration: integration with your current library and integration with your current music-listening lifestyle.

Shawns predictions are very similar to what I believe Apple will do with their music in the cloud solution. His closing statement really hits home for me on why Apple could really have some significant advantages over Google and Amazon. I only have two remaining questions.

  1. Will Apple allow content not purchased via iTunes (i.e. ripped from CD or imported) that can be matched to content in the iTunes store to stream from the cloud?
  2. Will the service be introduced at WWDC? Doesn't it seems like a better fit for the fall music/iPod event?

Listen to What You Love

That said, this is even more of a reason to turn on shuffle from time to time and let the random happen. And, while the random is happening, take the time to rate each song as you hear it. It only takes a few seconds and can prove invaluable for separating the wheat from the chaff. That way, even if you don’t or can’t delete the music you don’t like, you can at least focus in on the stuff you do.

This is exactly how I am slowly rating everting in my iTunes library.

Intro to iTunes - Part 1 - The Basics

In this the first of a three part series on iTunes I discuss the basics. This is a great video for new iPhone, iPad, or iPod users that are not familiar with iTunes. I go over the main interface, different view types, and some basic tips. Part 2 of this series will go more in depth on playlists and syncing your devices, part 3 will go into much more advanced topics. Both will be released shortly.
