Tiered Data Plans

John Gruber via Daring Fireball

“Unlimited” hasn’t worked for the carriers, and has never truly meant unlimited anyway. If you use more than 2 GB per month you’re going to pay more, but this strikes me as fair, because most people don’t use that much data.

What I don’t get is why not offer everyone the $10 for 75 MB plan? Lower the monthly minimum and get more people to switch from feature phones to app phones.

I agree. It makes sense to me that giving a customer a taste of data on a smart or app phone would lead to a good percentage of those customers upping theit data plan. My Mother is a perfect example. She bought a 3Gs and the 250 MB plan for $15 a month. As she got addicted to apps and having a real computer in her hand she moved to the 2 GB plan month 2. If only the $25 2 GB plan was offered I don't know if she would have bought the iPhone in the first place. My only thought is that Verizon doesn't believe they can recoup the smartphone subsidy at $10 a month.
